Securian Financial has appointed veteran lawyer Renee Montz (pictured) as general counsel and corporate secretary, succeeding Gary Christensen, who is retiring at the end of the year after 37 years with the company. Christensen, who first joined Securian in 1984, is set to remain with the company as an executive legal advisor until his retirement at the end of the year.
Montz brings to Securian 25 years of legal experience in insurance, securities, sales distribution, mergers and acquisitions, regulatory issues and board governance. She joins the company from American Equity Investment Life Holding Co., where she served as executive vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary for five of her seven-year tenure. Prior to that, Montz spent 10 years in various legal roles, including general counsel at Aegon USA Investment Management. Montz began her legal career in private practice at Mayer Brown, where she spent four years as an attorney for 4 years.
