3M’s legal chief Ivan Fong joins Medtronic as general counsel

3M’s longtime legal chief, Ivan Fong (pictured) has been named executive vice president, general counsel and secretary for health care technology company Medtronic, effective February 1, 2022. Fong will be succeeding Brad Lerman, who is retiring at the end of January.

Fong joined 3M in 2012 as general counsel and senior vice president of legal affairs and, earlier this year, was named executive vice president, chief legal and policy officer. He has also served as secretary since 2019. He also previously served as general counsel for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and as chief legal officer and secretary for Cardinal Health and Vendor Financial Services. Earlier in his career, Fong practiced law at Covington & Burling for 7 years, he later served as deputy associate attorney general for the U.S. Department of Justice.
